Good day folks. Kevin Baylor, Managing Partner and CTO of Alliance IT.
I hope your day is going well. I hope your week is going well and life in general treating you well.
Wanted to cover a little bit of a pet peeve or a sore subject with me on occasion and it revolves around backups and Microsoft OneDrive.
Personally speaking and probably professionally speaking, I’m going to say that OneDrive is not a backup solution. Please do not come to me and say, “I am backing up my computer with OneDrive.”
Yes. In OneDrive settings, you have the option to go in and click on the tab that says “Backup” and it will take your desktop, your documents, your picture folders and back them up to OneDrive.
But please know that this is a sync of those files. I don’t consider it a true backup. If you wanted to truly back up those files, you should be looking at solutions such as Veeam or Datto or Carbonite or many other true backup solutions out there.
Yes. If you delete a file, there is a recycle bin in OneDrive. If you’re using a personal OneDrive, it’s going to go into your OneDrive site. It’s going to the left-hand side, recycle bin and you may find your file there.
OneDrive for Business, pretty much the same scenario. You would log into the OneDrive site, which is really SharePoint. Go to the left-hand side. Go to your recycle bin. You may find the file there.
At the bottom of that, in the OneDrive for Business, there is the option for a second-stage recycle bin. But do keep in mind that Microsoft does flush those out. On the personal side, it is only 30 days in the recycle bin, 93 days on the business side.
If you truly want to back up your files or if you want to consider OneDrive as your backup of those local files, let’s make sure you’re backing up OneDrive as well. There are many solutions out there designed specifically to back up Microsoft 365, Office 365 platforms and ecosystems.
Again Veeam, SkyKick, Datto, multiple solutions that are true backup solutions for those. I highly encourage you to look at using those. Otherwise, enjoy OneDrive. Enjoy the file sync. Enjoy a little extra peace of mind. Don’t get too overconfident. Have a great day.
