Every smartphone has a hidden capability that few people take advantage of – but with the proliferation of remote working, it is a function that everyone should know. Virtually every smartphone can become a wifi hotspot, and 5G-capable mobile networks have become a reliable way to deliver enough data and speed for any job.
Most people can use their phones to do much of their business work on the go. They can check emails, send messages, update projects and even jump on a video call. But a phone hotspot allows you to connect alternate devices to the internet, such as a laptop or tablet. Sometimes a larger screen is necessary to work, or you may need the computer to edit a presentation effectively. Hotspots can also help with collaboration, allowing several people to work when traveling or waiting in an airport. Users do not need an internet connection, as the phone utilizes its data network to provide connections to the other devices. When the phone is connected to the mobile data network, it converts 4G or 5G data into a wifi signal that nearby devices can piggyback on.
Whether you have a 4G or 5G phone, a hotspot is a combination of software, hardware, and back-end network data services that collaborate to turn your phone into a broadband modem and router, creating your own wifi network.
How Does a Hotspot Work?
A hotspot works just like an external dedicated hotspot device but is integrated into your phone. There is no extra charging necessary and nothing extra to carry with you. It is important to note that none of this affects how the phone operates. While it provides a data network to other devices, it can still be used to browse the internet, make calls or answer messages. Most people aren’t required to buy anything special to make it all work. Virtually all Android and iOS devices in use today have this capability. Utilizing the phone as a hotspot is typically included monthly plan. All is not rosy; however – there are two minor drawbacks. Most providers will begin to throttle back speeds after a certain data threshold is reached, and using the hotspot function will drain your battery more rapidly.
Hotspots work best with 5G capability but can work adequately with 4G.
Security and Hotspots
We’ve got to speak to the security aspects of using a hotspot, as network security is essential. The good news is that utilizing a phone hotspot may increase your security profile, not cause a vulnerability. Phone hotspots help avoid needing insecure public hotspots in coffee shops and hotels. 5G networks take security to another level with 256-bit AES encryption, the ability to block fake mobile network transmission sites, and encrypting the phone’s ID during transmissions. A VPN can erect an even higher wall around your network by adding another layer of AES 256-bit encryption. But this additional level of security may cost you some speed and performance, however.
A phone hotspot is not as powerful as a traditional router, and the device you are connecting will need to be close by. Still, when traveling or away from a stationary office, the phone will give you the necessary capability.
