Microsoft is continuing its tradition of rolling out two new Windows 10 updates per year, with the announcement of the latest update dubbed version 21H1. The update is scheduled to arrive this spring, and while a few minor feature updates are expected, insiders believe it to be in preparation for a larger Windows 10 update, reportedly named Sun Valley. This is all being rolled out as a part of Microsoft’s renewed focus on Windows 10 for the future. Here’s what we have confirmed about Windows 10 version 21H1 so far.

What is Windows 10 version 21H1?

Windows 10 version 21H1 is Microsoft’s most recent update to the OS, arriving sometime this April or May update. Typically, Microsoft releases a larger feature overhaul in the spring, but 21H1 appears to be a minor update this time around.
According to Microsoft’s blog post, new Windows 10 features will include:

  • Multicamera support for Windows Hello, which permits users to opt for an external camera when utilizing high-end displays with integrated cameras.
  • Windows Defender Application Guard with be improved, notably by optimizing document opening scenario times.
  • Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) Group Policy Service (GPSVC) will now support remote work.
  • The Windows blog indicated the features being released in this particular update are “optimized this release to support our customers’ most pressing needs.”
Digital Trends also reports that the update will offer new icons, updated settings and some minor adjustments to Cortana and the search box experience.

When is the Next Windows 10 Update Arriving?

Because the spring update is not as significant as usual, you may be wondering when the “big” update is going to revealed. In October 2020, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella said that Microsoft is “doubling down” on Windows and PCs, and will continue to innovate.
Reading from a report from Windows Central, insiders believe that this could mean a major OS update for Windows 10 later in 2021, one that would provide a meaningful design refresh to the UI. The update (“Sun Valley”) could unveil a re-imagined Start menu, Action Center and File Explorer, with a more contemporary aesthetic and new features. Sun Valley is expected to arrive around the holiday season, but these dates are always subject to change.

Note: Microsoft has said that its Windows 10X OS designed for dual-screen devices like the Surface Duo and the Surface Neo, is expected to come to single-screen devices first.

When is the Spring Update Available?

According to Microsoft, Windows 10 21H1 will be available in the first half of the year – a rather wide open window. Windows Central reports the update will be available in May, though the date has not been confirmed by Microsoft. The company began rolling out a 21H1 build to Windows Insiders in the Beta program in March, and additional features will be provided in Windows Insider Preview builds as they come online.

When the update is available to the general public, it will be the first time an H1 (first half of the calendar year) feature update will be delivered via Microsoft’s servicing technology – the same way that monthly Windows 10 updates arrive, and the way the October 2020 update was released. If you’re already running either Windows 10 version 2004 or version 20H2, it’ll be a fast installation process to get the newest update.
