Windows 11 saw quite a few updates during 2022, some minor and some, like the recent 22H2 update, being more significant. There wasn’t anything earth-shattering, but a continuous supply of updates helped keep v11 top of mind and heart for users. Experts tend to agree that after the 2022 tweaks were completed, Windows 11 is finally worth moving over to. So what does Windows 11 have in store for 2023? Microsoft has not been very forthcoming with information, but it is expected that the incremental changes will keep coming, moving ever closer to seamless PC and mobile device operation.
Here’s what industry insiders expect from Windows 11 in 2023.
An End to Annual Updates
22H2 is rumored to have been the last Windows 11 update of any real significance. Microsoft is rumored to be returning to a more conventional three-year cycle for major version releases of Windows, with more frequent lesser updates between major announcements. Among the Microsoft team, these updates are known as “Moments.” Moment 1 added features such as tabbed File Explorer, Android apps support, taskbar overflow, Amazon App Store and iCloud photos in the Photos app to the Windows 11 package.
Microsoft plans to release no more than four “moments” a year or once every three months. The next major announcement is scheduled for 2024, and many assume it will be Windows 12 – but that is just industry speculation at this point.
What new features should we expect in upcoming Moments?
Zac Bowden and Daniel Rubino from Windows Central posted a video discussion in April 2022, speaking about what 23H2 should feature. Given how 23H2 (also known as the Sun Valley 3 update) is no longer stand-alone, features may be allocated throughout the year as part of the individual Moments. Bowden stated that Windows 11 is set to become increasingly touch-friendly. Android apps were finally integrated into Windows 11 in 2022 and should continue to increase in 2023, as upcoming Windows updates are expected to further enhance communication between Windows and Android.
In addition to Bowden’s thoughts, Rubino hinted that Windows 11 would be further optimized to work on foldable Windows products. Devices like the Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Fold 2022 could operate even more efficiently, though it remains to be seen the extent of the improvement.
Windows 11 in 2023
As stated, information is sparse regarding the upcoming changes to Windows 11 in 2023. The return to a three-year cycle for significant updates is considered noteworthy, as this was the method utilized by Windows to release updates before Windows 10. But the delivery of “Moments” every three months should still guarantee that newer computers and laptops stay up-to-date with the most innovative features. And while major or meaningful updates may be infrequent, security updates will still be distributed as required.
